Open Thread Discussion: What Do You Think About Same Sex Public Schools?

August 14, 2012 By Shane Vander Hart

North Carolina just opened up two of them.  I have mixed feelings.  On one hand as a former youth pastor who had to lead all boy junior high small groups the thought makes me shudder and I feel sorry for the teachers at the male academy.  On the other hand as a Dad of three kids with two teenage daughters who are starting to like boys – I LOVE the idea.

What do you think?  Now that we have our comment feature open, please share your thoughts.

There is nothing inherently wrong with the same-gender- school concept.
The issue will always be:  1) WHO controls it?  2) WHAT is the basic philosophy
    taught?

      Very true.

Since there is no peer-reviewed evidence that supports the efficacy of same-sex schools, it is difficult to justify the expenditure of public money to create them. If private sources of funding build and run the schools and parents choose to send their children there knowing that the school’s structure in itself will not improve their child’s learning (and could possibly impact it in negative ways), then I have no problem with parents exercising their right to choose one school instead of another.

Campbell’s Law

"The more any quantitative social indicator is used for social decision-making, the more subject it will be to corruption pressures and the more apt it will be to distort and corrupt the social processes it is intended to monitor."
