Rand Paul on Common Core

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) was in Iowa earlier this week (yes the 2016 race has really already begun in Iowa).  At his meeting with the Westside Conservative Club held at the Machine Shed Restaurant in Urbandale, IA he was asked about the Iowa Core.  Paul clarified saying… “which has the Common Core?” and then proceeds to answer the question.

You can watch below, start at 11:01 ish… the question is unintelligible in the video, but Paul rephrases it before he begins his answer.

  1. Good reply by Sen. Paul. I was also glad to see him refer to Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Outliers, because it has some excellent info in it. One chapter is about the “10,000 Hour Rule.” In essence, it takes 10,000 hours of practice to achieve mastery in a field or subject. Gee. Imagine that. Practice, aka “drill” to the reformers, is needed to master something. Dennis Prager, the radio talk show host, emphasizes that repetition is the mother of learning. No matter. “Process” of enjoyment in learning means kids shouldn’t be bored by having to do practice exercises. Tell that to the high school boys I saw at 9 a.m. today in humid, 87-degree heat on the football practice field. Soon, I’ll see band students out there in the God-awful central Texas heat practicing their marching drills. Isn’t it interesting kids can do that sort of thing, but not practice in academics?
