Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin appointed Hal Heiner as the state’s new Education and Workforce Secretary. In an interview with the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce he states that he wants to address the widening achievement gap in Kentucky through public charter schools.
Granted there is data that shows states with robust charter schools have outperformed states without. He’s missing the elephant in the room that Common Core has not helped this problem and it appears has made the problem worse. His first priority should be repealing Common Core, but if he’s cozying up to his state’s chamber of commerce it’s clear why it is not.
